Dr. Alvin Chin

Alvin Chin is Research Scientist at Discovery Partners Institute, University of Illinois System researching in mobile social networks, IoT, AI and data science. He was previously Principal Data Scientist at RXO Inc., where he led a team of junior data scientists for deploying data science models for pricing customer rates for loads to production. Previously, he was an Innovation Research Engineer at BMW Manufacturing in Greenville, SC, USA and AI and Emerging Technology Researcher, IT Innovation and Research Silicon Valley in BMW Technology Corporation in Mountain View, CA, USA, where he worked on applying research in AI and emerging technologies like democratizing AI, neuromorphic computing, quantum computing and causal machine learning to business problems within BMW. Prior to that he was Senior Researcher, Machine Learning in BMW Technology Corporation, Chicago at BMW North America, BMW Group where he worked on big data and machine learning for improving driving behaviour and enabling intelligent driving. His previous research involved studying user behavior in driving and in social networks, conducting data analytics of machine learning algorithms in BMW Connected, mining big data from the car data, and creating recommendations of items based on user profiling and context such as predicted destinations and trips, to provide intelligent user and car experiences.

Previous to BMW, he was Senior Researcher at Microsoft (previously at Nokia) in Beijing working in the Xpress Internet Services team of the Mobile Phones Services department, Microsoft Mobile Oy. Prior to that, he was previously in the Mobile Social Experiences group at Nokia Research Center, Beijing. At Nokia Research Center, he explored how the mobile phone could be used for creating physical proximity social networks to capture and infer context for social activity and collaboration in real physical environments, designing rich user experiences to interact with others in an indoor environment as well as with other social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, and also designing improved people recommendation systems that take into account physical context.

Alvin has a Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering and a Masters degree in Software Engineering from the University of Waterloo and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto.

Alvin is an active user of social networking and Web 2.0 technologies, and is a member of various program committees such as ACM KDD, SocialCom, ACM Hypertext, IEEE CPSCom, UIC/ATC, Ubicomp, CSCW and IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. He is an ACM Senior Member and an IEEE Senior Member.

Alvin is also active in the Chicago community, as Chair of the IEEE Chicago Section, Chair of the ACM Chicago chapter, Chair of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Chicago chapter, Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Chicago chapter, President of the University of Toronto Alumni Association in Chicago, Board Member of the Chicago Sister Cities Toronto Committee, and Member of the Board of Governors at The Metropolitan Club.
